Alliance for Rural America Endorses Railroad Competition Act

WASHINGTON – May 14, 2007 – The Alliance for Rural America (ARA) has endorsed the Railroad Competition and Service Improvement Act of 2007 (H.R. 2125/S. 953).

Larry Mitchell, national spokesperson for ARA, had the following to say in support of the legislation: “Rural America depends on our rail system to deliver the food, fiber, lumber and fuel which we produce as well as the things we use to produce them.  America, as a whole, needs the rail system for the same reasons.

ACGA Joins 20 Organizations Calling for a Halt to FSA County Office Closings

WASHINGTON – May 10, 2007 – The American Corn Growers Association (ACGA) and over 20 other organizations sent letters to the U.S. House of Representatives this week asking for a moratorium on Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office closings until a year after passage of the new farm bill.  Pending bipartisan legislation (H.R.1649), introduced by Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, D-S.D., and 14 cosponsors would accomplish the moratorium.

WASHINGTON – May 10, 2007 – “We are shocked and appalled,” says Larry Mitchell, Chief Executive of the American Corn Growers Association (ACGA) in response to the “Statement of Policy” (SOP) issued by the White House Office on Management and Budget (OMB) concerning the pending agriculture assistance bill. The SOP stated that President Bush would veto H.R. 2207, the “Agricultural Disaster Assistance and Western States Business Appropriations Act, 2007”, sponsored by David Obey, D-Wisc.

Corn Grower President calls for Full Investigation into Melamine Disaster

WASHINGTON, May 8, 2007 – In the interest of public safety and public confidence in the U.S. food system, Keith Bolin, President of the American Corn Growers Association (ACGA) called for a full investigation for the recent melamine disaster. Bolin also called for prosecution and punishment for any and all individuals involved in the calamity.

WASHINGTON – April 25, 2007 – The American Corn Growers Association (ACGA) has commended the Nebraska Senate for its recent actions to advance wind powered electric generation in the Husker State.  Keith Dittrich of Tilden, Neb., and chairman of the ACGA board of directors, applauded Senator Cap Dierks for prioritizing L.B. 629 and the Natural Resources Committee for their leadership in moving the bill out of committee.

Biofuel Imports Should Be Closely Scrutinized

WASHINGTON, April 16, 2007 – Importation of biofuels into the United States should be closely scrutinized according to the American Corn Growers Association (ACGA).  “We have learned some hard lessons in the past when importing alternate fuels which we must work hard to avoid in the future,” says ACGA Board Chairman Keith Dittrich.  “Year to date biofuel imports are setting a record pace and plans to import additional biodiesel and ethanol from foreign sources need to be closely reviewed and federal laws must be updated to ensure the future viability of the nation’s young and growing biofuel industry.”

American Corn Growers Call for Immediate Halt to County Farm Service Offices Shutdowns

WASHINGTON, April 12, 2007 – The American Corn Growers Association (ACGA) has called for an immediate halt to the closing of scores of Farm Service Agency (FSA) county offices. “This is not the time to be closing offices because we do not know what the next farm bill will require and there will most likely be a new farm disaster bill to be implemented to cover losses of the 2005 to 2007 crop years,” said ACGA Chief Executive Larry Mitchell, a former Deputy Administrator of FSA.
